File extension DOC is created using Microsoft Word for Windows application. DOC stands for the DOCument. New versions of Microsoft Word use DOCX file extension which is extension of DOC file format. A big advantage of this new format is that it is open and could be read by applications other than Microsoft Word. File extension DOC probably could be only compared in popularity to PDF file extension.

File extension XLS stands for Excel Spreadsheet. File of this type is created by Microsoft Excel application. Excel application was created by Microsoft in 1993 and now it is the most popular computer application to date. It is part of Microsoft Office Suite of applications.PDF file extensions could be opened by Acrobat Reader 8 which is part of Google Pack application suite.

Other popular document file extensions include PPS (power point slideshow), PPT (power point), PS (postscript).

Depending on what task you want to accomplish you may choose which application would be most suitable for you. If you'd like to create a several page document which you can share with other people who own Microsoft Software you should choose Microsoft Word and create a DOC file. If you want to create a spreadsheet use XLS. At the same time if you want to create some document which you want to put on the internet you should use Adobe Acrobat and create PDF document.

To open DOC file and XLS applications you will need Microsoft Word and Excel applications.If you have any of these applications and still cannot open these files there is a potential that you have broken file association in the registry which could cause windows displaying messages "Windows cannot open this file".
